AUSTIN, Texas -- Five swimmers and one relay team earned NCAA All-America honors on the second day to lead the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on day two of the NCAA Championships on Friday (March 28) inside the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Among those five were four men split across the 400-yard IM and the 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona), who won a swim-off just to get into the championship final, shot all the way up to third (51.96). He was joined in the final by classmate Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), who finished in seventh (52.12). In the 400-yard individual medley, senior Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) finished in sixth (3:41.33), while sophomore Dylan Bosch (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College, Sandton), who was right next to him, took seventh (3:41.65).
Senior Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) was the fifth, leading the way in the 200-yard freestyle. He picked up a third-place finish (1:32.58), two spots higher than last season. He was also just three hundredths-of-a-second off his time from the preliminaries in the morning, which he won. In the consolation final, senior Connor Jaeger (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) took 16th (1:35.48). Wynalda and Jaeger -- along with sophomore Anders Nielsen (Farum, Denmark) and junior Justin Glanda (Rochester Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) -- swam on the 800-yard freestyle relay team that took fourth (6:16.37). Each swimmer picked up an NCAA All-America honor for their efforts.
Michigan also scored points in the consolation finals of two events. First, the 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Peter Brumm (Cornlieus, N.C./Hough), Funk, senior John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy Prep) and Ortiz battled back all the way from eighth after the first 50 yards to take 10th (1:25.58). Brumm, who swam the opening (backstroke) leg of that relay, returned less than 30 minutes later and swam again, finishing 15th in the 100-yard butterfly (46.67).
The 2013-14 season concludes tomorrow (Saturday, March 29) with the final day of the NCAA Championships in Austin. Among the events contested that include U-M student-athletes: the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly, the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
