ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State) knocked in the game-winning goal with one second remaining in regulation to give the University of Michigan women's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 victory over ninth-ranked and previously unbeaten Wisconsin on Sunday (Sept. 14) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. Today's victory marked Michigan's first over a top-10 opponent since the 2003 season and gives the Maize and Blue a perfect 2-0 start in Big Ten play.
With 20 seconds left on the clock, Michigan was awarded a free kick on the left side from about 25 yards out, which was taken by freshman Taylor Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep). Her serve into the box was headed by two Wisconsin players, before sophomore defender Bailey Haydock (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley) played a ball from the far side back across the face of the goal to Sarkisian, who flicked it inside the near post.
The game-winning goal was Sarkisian's second score of the match. For the third straight game, Sarkisian found the back of the net within the first 12 minutes, this time putting Michigan up 1-0 at the 8:45 mark. Junior Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) carried the ball through the right side of the box and played a short chip to sophomore Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]), who put a header on net that was saved, but Sarkisian was there to clean up the rebound.
In the 36th minute, Haydock was issued a yellow card after taking down a Wisconsin player just inside the upper-left corner of the box. Badger junior Kinley McNicoll stepped up to the penalty spot and slid it past U-M keeper freshman Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md. /Our Lady of Good Counsel) on the left side of the net.
Wisconsin held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, but the Wolverines did not allow a goal off a corner-kick situation.
The second half featured several exciting scoring opportunities for both teams, including four shots on net for the Wolverines and three for the Badgers, but neither team could break the tie until Sarkisian's last-second game winner.
Hinz played all 90 minutes in net for the Wolverines, making six saves, to remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0.
Next up, the Wolverines will hit the road to face Rutgers and Maryland for the first time in program history and the first time since the two institutions joined the Big Ten Conference. U-M will take on Maryland at 4 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 19) in College Park, Md., before heading to New Brunswick, N.J., to play Rutgers on Sunday (Sept. 21) at 1 p.m. U-M's match at Rutgers will be live on the Big Ten Network.
