Over the next few weeks, each of the eight new faces on the Michigan ice hockey roster will be introduced to fans, providing a first look at the freshman class. This week, defenseman Niko Porikos checks in with MGoBlue.com.
A native of Ann Arbor, Porikos dreamed of playing for the Michigan as a kid, attending hockey games at Yost and listing the Michigan class of 2005 (Charlie Henderson, Nick Martens, David Moss, Brandon Rogers, Jason Ryzner and Michael Woodford, Jr.) as the main reason he decided to start playing hockey.
Porikos played the last two seasons with the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), leading all team defensemen in scoring last season with 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 51 games played. Porikos also spent time at forward with Hamilton and may have the same dual role with the Wolverines. Porikos is a former Victory Honda U18 teammate of classmates Tony Calderone and Cutler Martin, as well as current sophomore Max Shuart.
What was your familiarity with Michigan's program before you arrived here?
The Michigan hockey class of 2005 was the reason I started to play hockey. I grew up in Ann Arbor, and it has always been my dream to play here.
What are some interests you have away from the rink?
I love anything business oriented. From my favorite television show (Shark Tank), to starting my own small businesses when I was 13, I've always enjoyed it. I currently help with a small business that works in iPhone customizing and repairs.
If you had to describe yourself as a player in a few sentences what would you say?
I like to think of myself as a versatile player. Whether playing forward or defense I try to adapt to whatever role my coaches want me to play. I constantly try to improve my game in all aspects.
What are your academic goals here at Michigan?
My academic interests revolve around math and business. My major academic goal is to be accepted into the Ross School of Business.
When did you make your final decision to come to Michigan?
Ever since my first Michigan hockey game, I knew this was where I wanted to be. Meeting the coaches when I was younger and then attending the Red Berenson hockey camps, I tried to make an effort to show my dream of playing here. My final decision was definitely an easy one and well worth the wait.
