ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In front of the largest home crowd the U-M Soccer Stadium has ever seen for a women's soccer match (2,704), the University of Michigan women's soccer team improved to 7-0 at home as sophomore Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) scored the game-winning goal with 24 seconds remaining to lift U-M to a 2-1 victory over Michigan State on Saturday evening (Sept. 27). The Wolverines have won three straight home games with goals in the final 30 seconds of play or overtime.
Waldeck took a pass from sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State), turned and pushed a shot past Spartan goalkeeper Courtney Clem inside the right post from 12 yards out. Sarkisian and freshman Niki Wilkinson (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) were credited with assists on the game-winning goal at 89:36 from Waldeck, who tallied her fifth goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines grabbed the 1-0 advantage on a tap-in from junior Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) less than a minute into the second half. Waldeck and senior midfielder Jen Pace (Valley Village, Calif./Notre Dame) assisted on the second goal of the season for Harris, whose goal came at 45:57.
Michigan State scored the game-tying goal less than 10 minutes later. Jamie Cheslik netted her sixth of the season at 54:55, scooping up a loose ball in the box following a cross from the right. Morgan McKerchie and Paige Wester tallied assists on the scoring play.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) made a pair of saves in the game for the Wolverines, including a diving save in the 70th minute that sent a Spartan shot wide left. Michigan outshot Michigan State by a 17-10 margin, but the Spartans had five corner kicks compared to one for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines will play their second match of a three-game homestand when they host Nebraska on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 3:30 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
