LINCOLN, Neb. -- Despite a hard-fought third-set victory, the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team suffered a tough 3-1 loss (25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17) to No. 4-ranked University of Nebraska on Saturday (Oct. 10) at the Devaney Center.
Both teams hit the court ready to play, and the contest began with the score coming point for point. Nebraska, however, took a 9-8 lead and pulled away from there, staying at minimum four points ahead of Michigan throughout the rest of the first set. The Cornhuskers recorded just three attack errors in their first 25 points, rallying to a 25-18 first-set victory.
The Wolverines gained their footing in set two of the evening, taking an early 5-1 lead after forcing three quick Nebraska errors. Led by junior Ally Davis' three kills, the Maize and Blue led the set through their first 13 points. Nebraska then forced a tie at 13-13 and again at 15-15, finally surging on to a 25-19 set victory and going ahead, 2-0. Despite the score, Michigan registered 17 digs to match Nebraska, and recorded two blocks.
After a short break, Michigan hit the court in set three with a different intensity than before, stunning Nebraska with a 25-20 win. Sophomore Claire Kieffer-Wright led the charge with five kills, while Davis, senior Carly Warner, junior Abby Cole and freshman Carly Skjodt each tallied two. The Maize and Blue recorded a match-high .297 attack average in the third set, limiting Nebraska to just one block.
With the score 2-1 in favor of Nebraska heading into the fourth set of the night, Michigan came out fighting to remain alive. The set featured more defense than offense, however, as Wolverines recorded 20 digs and an attack average of just .027. Cole picked up the first point of the set, but Nebraska soon pulled away and finished off the game with a 25-17 set victory.
Overall, the Maize and Blue recorded a .159 attack average on the night, registering 69 kills and 50 kills. Skjodt led Michigan with a career-high 16 digs. Her previous career high of 13 digs came Wednesday (Oct. 7) against Iowa. Senior Lindsey Lerg and Warner also recorded double-digit digs on the evening, picking up 14 and 11, respectively.
From the net, Kieffer-Wright tallied a team-high 10 kills, while Davis and Cole each swatted nine. Defensively, Kieffer-Wright also led the team in blocks with two.
The Maize and Blue will return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 14) when it hosts Rutgers University at Cliff Keen Arena. The match, which is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, will also serve as a U-M Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night in conjunction with a promotion for Ann Arbor Recreation and Education.
