THINGS TO KNOW
The University of Michigan men's soccer team (7-3-3, 2-1-2 Big Ten), closing out the week following a 1-0 win over Valparaiso on Monday (Oct. 19), vies for crucial Big Ten points against Indiana (8-4-2, 1-3-1 Big Ten), which currently sits at the bottom of the Big Ten table (1-3-1, 4 points), but sports the third-best RPI (35) of all conference teams. Michigan enters ranked No. 57 in the index without factoring in the win over Valparaiso.
The conference matchup is slated for a 7 p.m. start on Saturday (Oct. 24) at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington.
WOLVERINE BITES
Michigan is 5-1-2 in its last eight matches and is outscoring teams 17-6 over that span. The Maize and Blue also holds distinct advantages in shots at 140-93 and in shots on goal at 53-31 over the exemplary run of form.
The U-M offense ranks second in the conference with 1.77 goals per game. U-M is also No. 2 in total goals with 23, which already surpasses last season's total output with four matches to play in the regular season. The most goals U-M has scored in the Chaka Daley era is 30 in 2012.
The offense is led by freshman Francis Atuahene, who ranks No. 8 nationally and second in the B1G in total points with 23. He also ranks No. 7 nationally and No. 2 in the conference in goals with 10, leading the conference in shots per game (4.31) and shots on goal per contest with 19.1. He has scored a goal in seven of the last eight matches and has 17 points over that span.
Junior Rylee Woods ranks No. 3 in the Big Ten in assists with five and leads the team in the category, while goalkeeper Evan Louro ranks first in conference in goals-against average at 0.80. Senior Colin McAtee, who has five goals and ranks second on the team in the category, ranks No. 6 in the Big Ten. He has scored four goals over the last five games.
Michigan ranks No. 57 in the latest NCAA RPI and No. 7 in the Great Lakes Region. With three Big Ten matches remaining in the regular season, U-M counts Indiana (1-3-0), Michigan State (2-0-2) and Ohio State (2-1-1) as its remaining in-conference opposition.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
Indiana -- The Hoosiers are paced by Femi Hollinger-Janzen, who leads the team with six goals and 15 points overall. Dynamic attacker Tanner Thompson is No. 9 nationally and second in the Big Ten in assists with seven, while goalkeeper Colin Webb is fourth in the conference in goals-against average (.873) and ninth in save percentage (70 percent). As a whole, the Hoosier offense is No. 5 nationally in shots per game (17).
Indiana also enters on a solid run of form and is 5-1-1 over the last seven matches, with a 2-1 win over Louisville on Tuesday (Oct. 20). IU owns a distinct advantage in the all-time series with U-M but has won two of the last three matchups. The last time U-M traveled to Bloomington, it knocked off then-No. 11 Hoosiers, 2-1, on Oct. 19, 2012.
