BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell, 1-0, to the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday (Oct. 24) at Indiana's Bill Armstrong Stadium. A score for IU's Grant Lillard proved to be the lone goal of the match, as U-M fell to 2-2-2 in Big Ten play with two matches to play.
Michigan had its first flurry of the contest over a three-minute span in the 11th-14th minutes, as sophomore Michael Kapitula, senior Colin McAtee and freshman Francis Atuahene each had shots one minute apart. The Wolverines then earned a pair of corners in the 13th minute, but they were cleared to safety by the Hoosier back line.
The Hoosiers marked the lone score of the match at the 17:58 mark. Following an IU corner, Matt Foldsey tapped a ball to Femi Hollinger-Janzen, who found the head of Lillard on the back post for the 1-0 lead and eventual match-winner. The goal snapped a 198-minute shutout streak -- keyed by sophomore goalkeeper Evan Louro -- that dated back to the Rutgers contest (Oct. 10). Louro had four saves in the opening stanza of action today.
In the 57th minute, U-M was presented with a golden opportunity, as senior William Mellors-Blair had a curling shot that rang off the crossbar. The follow-up shot by junior Yamann Sahlool was high for the best Wolverine chance to that point.
Atuahene had the two U-M shots on goal in the 77th and 88th minutes but was unable to beat IU goalkeeper Colin Webb, as the Hoosiers moved to 2-3-1 in Big Ten play.
U-M returns home for its final homestand of the season, hosting the Western Michigan Broncos Tuesday (Oct. 27) at 7:30 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium.
