ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind 25 points from sophomore Katelynn Flaherty and 19 from freshman Nicole Munger, the University of Michigan women's basketball team eased to a 97-55 win over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 19) inside Crisler Center. U-M used a 7-0 run to start the first quarter and a 13-0 spurt to end it to put the game away early.
Flaherty shot 9-for-14 from the floor to finish as the game's leading scorer as U-M shot 58.5 percent (38-for-65) from the floor as a team. Munger and freshman Boogie Brozoski (10) joined Flaherty in double figures in points as all but one Wolverine found the scoring column. The Maize and Blue totaled 22 assists, led by five from junior Siera Thompson, and a season-low nine turnovers in the win.
Michigan jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a triple by Flaherty sandwiched by layups from Thome and Mitchell to force a Miami timeout just 1:17 into the contest. The Wolverines kept their foot on the gas, extending their lead to 20-9 on a Brozoski fast break layup to force another Miami timeout at the 2:31 mark of the first. The timeout did not deter the Maize and Blue, which ended the quarter on a 13-0 run capped on a sophomore Jillian Dunston putback to beat the clock for a 29-9 lead.
Thompson hit a triple in the closing seconds of the second quarter to send the home team to the locker room with a 49-26 lead. Michigan shot 52.9 percent (18-for-34) from the floor in the first half, compared to a 44.4 percent (12-for-27) showing for Miami. Flaherty led all scorers with 13 points, while Munger scored nine off the bench.
The Wolverines started the third quarter on the 10-0 run over the first 2:30 of the third quarter to push their lead to 59-26 off a Thompson layup.
All 12 Wolverines dressed saw action as the Maize and Blue led by as many as 42 in the win.
Michigan next meets up with Eastern Michigan, heading to nearby Ypsilanti on Wednesday (Dec. 23) for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
