ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Junior rightfielder Kelsey Susalla of the University of Michigan softball team was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week in recognition of her power-hitting performance last weekend at the Easton Bama Bash, the league office announced on Monday (Feb. 23). Susalla shares the weekly accolade with Minnesota's Erica Meyer.
Susalla was named the Bama Bash Tournament MVP after hitting .412 (7-for-17) and helping the Wolverines claim a perfect 5-0 weekend sweep. She boasted a 1.059 slugging percentage with three doubles, a triple and two home runs in the tournament.
Susalla, a native of Garden City, Michigan, opened the tournament with three straight two-hit games and seven total RBI. She drove in the Wolverines' final three runs in its first game against No. 3-ranked Alabama, providing insurance in the fifth and seventh frames en route to an 8-2 decision. She also recorded a three-run triple in the first inning of U-M's subsequent game against Lipscomb.
It is Susalla's first Big Ten weekly honor and the third for the Wolverines this season. Senior catcher Lauren Sweet and sophomore RHP Megan Betsa garnered the league's player and pitchers accolades last week.
Michigan will kick off its annual spring break trip with a stop at the ASU Louisville Slugger Invitational in Tempe, Arizona, next weekend (Fri-Sun., Feb. 27-March 1). The Wolverines will open play against Toledo (1:30 p.m. MST) and host Arizona State (4:30 p.m. MST) on Friday at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium.
