ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Junior infielder Sierra Romero of the University of Michigan softball team was named Big Ten Player of the Week in recognition of her performance last week during the Wolverines' six games in California, the league office announced on Monday (March 9).
Romero batted .692 (9-for-13) with a league-leading 1.538 slugging percentage and .818 on-base percentage in six games in Fullerton, California, including three against ranked opposition. She knocked out three home runs -- a first-inning shot against No. 1 Florida and two against San Jose State -- and tallied seven runs batted in. The Wolverine captain also recorded eight walks, including a Michigan single-game record five at Cal State Fullerton.
It is Romero's third career Big Ten Player of the Week award and her 10th career weekly conference honor. The Wolverines have garnered at least one conference weekly accolade in each of the last three weeks.
Michigan will open up the home portion of its 2014-15 campaign with a three-game series Kent State this weekend (Sat-Sun., March 14-15) at the Wilpon Softball Complex, home of Alumni Field. U-M will play two on Saturday, hosting the Golden Flashes at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and close out the weekend with a 1 p.m. slate on Sunday.
