INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- With two Wolverines finishing among the top 20 individually, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted an 882 team total and fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, which wrapped up Sunday (April 26) at the Fort Golf Resort. Overall, it marked just the ninth time in program history the Wolverines closed the conference tournament among the top five. In addition, the Maize and Blue's 882 total is U-M's lowest 54-hole total at the Big Ten event.
Beginning on Friday (April 24), the Wolverines opened the conference tournament posting their lowest team total of all-time with a 291, thanks in part to freshman Megan Kim's two-under 69 and senior Lauren Grogan's season-best even-par 72. With the tally, the Wolverines put themselves in third place, 10 shots out of the lead.
In a rainy and delayed Saturday (April 25) second round, U-M battled the elements but saw freshman Emily White rebound from an opening 85 to card a career-best, even-par 72 to guide the Wolverines to a 297 second-round tally, as the Wolverines slipped to fifth with a 588 two-day total.
Using three final-round tallies of one-over 73 from White, sophomore Grace Choi and freshman Kathy Lim, the Wolverines closed today with a 294 total, giving U-M its best 54-hole total at the conference event at 882 -- eight shots better than the previous mark.
For the first time since 2009, U-M had four Wolverines finish among the top 30, led by Kim's tie for 13th with a career-best 220 (69-76-75). Choi was two shots back of her teammate and tied for 18th at 222 (75-74-73), while Lim posted a new career best with her 224 (75-76-73), slotting her tied for 25th. Junior Catherine Peters posted three straight rounds of 75 to give the Maize and Blue four among the top 30 as she carded a 225 and tied for 29th. Grogan ended her final Big Ten Championships tying for 36th at 227 (72-80-75), while White rounded out U-M's starting six tying for 50th at 230 (85-72-73).
For the third straight year, the Big Ten has co-champions as Ohio State (281-292-290) and Northwestern (284-295-284) tied for the conference crown with one-under 863 tallies. Purdue (293-285-294) was third, and Michigan State (293-292-293) was fourth.
Despite the Wolverines season being completed, this year's field for the four NCAA Regionals will be feature on the Golf Channel on Monday (April 27) at 7 p.m.
