ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior second baseman Sierra Romero of the University of Michigan softball team was named espnW's National Player of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday (May 12). It is the inaugural season for the espnW top softball honor.
Romero ranks among the nation's leaders in several categories, listing 10th with a .469 batting average, third with a .624 on-base percentage and sixth with a .979 slugging percentage. She also ranks third with 74 runs batted in and owns a Michigan program single-season record 76 runs scored. Romero is a top-10 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year; last year she was a top-three finalist.
A two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and three-time All-Big Ten first team selection, she was named last weekend's Big Ten Tournament MVP after hitting .556 with three homers and 11 RBI last weekend. Among her home runs, Romero knocked out her 10th career grand slam, establishing a new NCAA record in the category.
