
Freshman Focus with Joseph Cecconi

Each Friday, MGoBlue.com will profile one of six freshmen leading up to the Michigan ice hockey exhibition opener on Oct. 4 against the University of Toronto at Yost Ice Arena. Today's (Sept. 18) installment features defenseman Joseph Cecconi. A native of Youngstown, New York, Cecconi was selected in the fifth round (133rd overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars.
A teammate of Cooper Marody with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL), Cecconi appeared in all 60 games this past season, recording 17 points (3G, 14A) and was invited to the 2014 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game. Cecconi was singled out by the NHL Network during the NHL Draft broadcast as a player to watch, and adds a big presence (6-2, 205 lbs) and right-handed shot to Michigan's blue line.

Q. Why did you choose Michigan?
A. I chose Michigan because of the great history surrounding the program, the coaching staff and the great education the school offers.
Q. What is your first memory of coming to Yost Ice Arena?
A. My first game was actually Michigan's home opener last year against New Hampshire.
Q. When did you start playing the game of hockey, and what got you hooked?
A. I started playing hockey when I was eight years old. Everything about the game got me hooked.
Q. Who is your favorite current or former Michigan athlete?
A. Jack Johnson
Q. Which NHL player(s) do you model your game after?
A. Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson
Q. What is your favorite activity outside of hockey?
A. I like to cook and I like to play golf.
