EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team lost for the first time in Big Ten play, falling, 3-0, at Michigan State on Friday (Sept. 25) at DeMartin Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans became just the second team to score on the Wolverines in the first half this season, finding the back of the net just 39 seconds into the match. Lexy Warner's initial shot was stopped by U-M goalkeeper Megan Hinz, but Michaela Kovacs was there to clean up the rebound to give Michigan State the 1-0 lead early.
In the sixth minute, senior Corinne Harris nearly netted the equalizer as she won a box inside the penalty box and fired a shot toward net that bounced off the cross bar.
The Wolverines held a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first half but were down 1-0 at the break.
Harris got a good look at goal in the 56th minute, sending a shot just over the cross bar, and in the 58th minute, senior Christina Murillo put a direct kick on frame from 30 yards, but MSU keeper Gabrielle Gauruder tipped it over the bar.
Michigan State pushed its lead to two goals in the 61st minute as the Spartans played a long ball in behind Michigan's defense and Kristelle Yewah ran onto it in the left side of the penalty box and beat Hinz far post.
Six minutes later, MSU put the game out of reach, as Erica Goodenough tallied its third goal at 66:33.
Senior goalkeeper, captain Maddie Clarfield, came on to replace Hinz in goal in the 74th minute, and U-M's defense did not allow a single shot on Clarfield in the final 17 minutes of play.
The Wolverines will wrap up a three-game road stand next weekend with matches at Maryland on Thursday (Oct. 1) at 7:30 p.m. and at Rutgers on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 1 p.m. The Maryland match will be live on the Big Ten Network, while the Rutgers game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
