Michigan Has Strong Showing on Day One of Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team started the New Year with a strong performance on day one (Saturday, Jan. 16) of the 2016 Michigan Invitation held at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines won all seven singles matches against the North Florida Ospreys and posted four doubles victories in action against Georgia Tech and Tennessee.
In doubles, Michigan collected one victory in four matches against Georgia Tech to start the day. The Wolverines rallied in the second rotation of doubles competition, sweeping the Tennessee Volunteers, as the three pairings yielded two points total in three matches; 6-0 and a pair of 6-1 scores.
Freshman Kate Fahey and junior Sara Remynse teamed to win both their double matches for the Wolverines. The duo came from behind to post a 6-4 victory against Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Megen Kurey of Georgia Tech and tallied a 6-1 win over Tennessee 's Tiffany Tavares and Brittany Lindl.
Michigan closed out the day with singles action against North Florida, winning six of the seven matches in straight sets. Fahey completed an unblemished opening day of competition, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Michelle Valdez. The solid singles performance by the Wolverines included dominating victories from freshman Brienne Minor (6-0, 6-0) and sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook (6-1, 6-1). Sophomore Alex Najarian went the distance and held on to beat Rafaella Gomez in a three-set battle (6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
The Michigan Invitational continues tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 17). The day will begin with a round of singles between North Florida and Tennessee at 9 a.m. Michigan will begin play with doubles at noon.
