The University of Michigan women's basketball team (7-2) wraps up a seven-game road stretch this weekend with a trip out west. First up is a contest at San Diego State (2-5) on Friday (Dec. 9) in San Diego, followed by a Sunday (Dec. 11) game at No. 9 UCLA from Los Angeles.
For the first time since the 2013 NCAA Tournament, U-M is headed to the Golden State for a pair of games. Michigan has a pair of California natives on its roster in senior point guard Siera Thompson (Gardena) and student assistant Emoni Jackson. It marks the first collegiate games for Thompson in her home state.
The Aztecs are 2-5 on the season after falling to UC Davis, 75-55, on Dec. 2. SDSU has one player scoring in double figures in McKynzie Fort (16.6 ppg) with Kymberly Ellison chipping in 9.0 points per game. San Diego State is averaging 60.4 points per game on 37.8 percent shooting while allowing 70.6 points per game on 45.3 percent shooting. Michigan and SDSU met in 2014 in Puerto Rico, with U-M taking a 70-50 win behind a career-high 25 from Siera Thompson and 23 from Katelynn Flaherty.
The Bruins (6-1) have won five straight games after a 72-49 win over Hawaii on Dec. 4. Monique Billings (17.7 ppg), Jordin Canada (17.3 ppg) and Kennedy Burke (12.9 ppg) are each scoring in double figures as UCLA averages 78.9 points per game on 41.7 percent shooting. The Bruins are allowing 62.4 points per game on 36.6 percent shooting. UCLA leads the all-time series against Michigan, 3-0.
Michigan and UCLA are facing each other for the third consecutive season. UCLA won a 69-65 contest at Crisler Center during the 2015 WNIT en route to winning the tournament. The Bruins took an 86-77 win last season in Ann Arbor despite 24 points from Hallie Thome, 20 from Katelynn Flaherty and 15 from Nicole Munger. This is Michigan's first trip to UCLA in school history.
Senior Danielle Williams will see a familiar face when Michigan takes on UCLA for the third straight season. Her twin sister, Dominique, is a redshirt junior for the Bruins after missing last season due to injury. Danielle and Dominique were on the court at the same time for a minute of game time when the teams met in the semifinals of the 2015 WNIT.
Michigan is 1-1 this season against top-25 competition, knocking off No. 25 Gonzaga before falling to No. 10 Florida State in the Virgin Islands. Michigan, which will face No. 9 UCLA to wrap the weekend, has four top-10 wins in school history, with the last one coming against No. 8 Ohio State on Jan. 7, 2012. It is the first time Michigan is facing the No. 9-ranked team since falling to No. 9 Purdue on March 3, 2001.
