CLEMSON, S.C. -- The No.10-ranked University of Michigan rowing team showed its team depth, competing against six nationally ranked crews and earning eight race wins at the 20-team Clemson Invitational this weekend (Sat-Sun., April 16-17) at Lake Hartwell.
Racing in three sessions, on Sunday morning as well as Saturday morning and afternoon, the Wolverines had a strong opening day of competition, as their first and second varsity four crews swept all four races, and the second varsity eight crew also earned a Saturday sweep of both its races.
In the Saturday morning session, the Wolverines raced against Oregon State, No. 17 Radcliffe, No. 8 Texas, No. 19 Syracuse and San Diego in varsity competition. Michigan's 1V8 crew finished second just behind Texas in 6:48.0. The 2V8 earned its first race win of the day, getting out in the lead early in the first 500 meters of the race, and holding off Texas with a 6:55.3 finish. Michigan's 1V4 (7:44.7) began the day with a win as well, which was followed by the 2V4 (7:34.1) finishing first in its race.
The Saturday afternoon session saw Michigan take on Central Florida, Tennessee, No. 14 Washington State, Oregon State, Oklahoma and Columbia in all varsity races. The 1V8 crew earned its first win of the competition in 6:28.8. Michigan's 2V8 won its second race in 6:31.6, while the 1V4 crew earned its second win (7:22.0) in open water ahead of Oklahoma. The 2V4 also won its second race of the day in 7:25.1.
In the final session of the competition on Sunday morning, Michigan took on varsity crews from Oklahoma, No. 19 Syracuse, UCLA, No. 3 Virginia and Penn. The 1V8 opened the morning with second place finish, as the Wolverines (6:40.1) remained in touch with UVA for most of the race. Michigan's 2V8 also finished in second in a close race with UVA, finishing in 6:43:3. The first varsity four broke away from the field with UVA's four, finishing second in 7:35.7. Michigan's 2V4 had perhaps the most exciting race of the competition, narrowly edging Virginia at the line to complete a two-day sweep with a winning time of 7:19.7.
In novice competition, Michigan's 1N8 finished fifth (7:30.9) on Saturday morning in tough racing conditions, took fourth (7:07.6) on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday morning, the novice crew took fourth in 6:58.8.
Michigan will continue its spring season on April 30, as the Wolverines will host Louisville and Michigan State at Belleville Lake, with the morning session slated to start at 9 a.m.
