VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The 10th-ranked University of Michigan rowing team swept all varsity races against Louisville and Michigan State on Senior Day (Saturday, April 30) at Belleville Lake. With a stiff cross-tailwind aiding all crews, the Wolverines had a strong showing in their last event before the Big Ten Rowing Championships in two weeks.
Michigan had impressive victory margins in all of its varsity wins, beginning with the second varsity four, which pulled away from the field early, finishing 15.63 seconds ahead of Louisville in 7:18.50. The Wolverines' first varsity four also scored an open-water victory, finishing in 7:14.40, 18.83 seconds ahead of Louisville.
The Wolverines' second varsity eight finished a little more than a boat length ahead of Louisville in 6:31.20, as the Cardinals (6:35.52) and Michigan State (6:52.59) followed Michigan in order again. In the final race of the morning, Michigan's first varsity eight crew used a strong opening 1,000 meters to pull ahead, finishing in a blistering 6:13.98, an open-water victory ahead of Michigan State (6:21.47) and Louisville (6:24.90).
In novice racing, Michigan's second novice eight crew kicked off the day with perhaps the most exciting race of the morning. The Wolverines overtook Michigan State midway through the race and pulled away in the final 500 meters, finishing in 7:12.90, ahead of the Spartans (7:16.90).
In the first novice eight race, Michigan took third place in 7:07.90, as Louisville's crew finished in front in 6:44.46, well ahead of Michigan State (7:03.61).
Michigan will head into the Camp Wolverine phase of its season, with two-a-day practices and a focus on peaking in the postseason, which begins in Indianapolis in two weeks.
