ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan softball team used a late surge, highlighted by a four-run fifth inning, to defeat Maryland, 8-0, in six innings on Sunday afternoon (April 24) in front of 2,473 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The Wolverines pushed their win streak to 10 in a row with the decision and improved to 15-2 in Big Ten Conference play.
Michigan tallied four doubles in the final two frames, including three in the four-run fifth. Senior rightfielder Kelsey Susalla led off both innings with doubles to the left centerfield wall and scored both times. Her run in the sixth -- on sophomore catcher Aidan Falk's bases-loaded single to left -- earned U-M the run-rule margin and brought an early end to the contest.
Falk, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, also doubled in the fifth inning, sending a deep ball to the wall in rightfield to drive in Susalla and sophomore pinch runner Nikki Wald. Senior centerfielder Sierra Lawrence doubled three batters later after a two-out walk turned the order over, sending a screamer just fair down the leftfield line to plate two more.
Lawrence, who also posted a pair of hits, scored in the first inning when, after she drew a leadoff walk, senior second baseman Sierra Romero lined a two-run shot just over the rightfield wall and hard into the fencing front of the outfield grandstand. It marks her 13th long ball of the season.
Junior RHP Megan Betsa (18-3) tossed a one-hitter for the second time this weekend, losing her no-hit bid on a lined single into shallow centerfield with one out in the fifth inning. She struck out eight Terrapin batters through six innings but allowed four walks. Only two Terps reached scoring position; Betsa quickly retired the next batter in both instances.
