BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan softball team knocked out four home runs, including grand slams off the bats of junior third baseman Lindsay Montemarano and senior centerfielder Sierra Lawrence, to power past Indiana, 12-4, in six innings on Sunday (April 3) at the Hoosiers' Andy Mohr Field. The Wolverines boasted 11 total home runs in the weekend series sweep.
Michigan plated single runs in each of the first three innings before blowing the game open with a five-run fourth. Senior second baseman Sierra Romero led off the frame with a solo shot to leftfield -- her 11th homer of the season and third in as many games. U-M used a bunt single and back-to-back walks to quickly load the bases for Montemarano, who worked the count full and, after fouling off a few, bombed a no-doubt grand slam deep over the leftfield wall -- her eighth homer of the season.
Lawrence knocked out her grand slam two innings later to push the Wolverine lead into run-rule territory. Michigan took advantage of IU miscues -- a leadoff hit-by-pitch and two fielding errors -- to load the bases, and Lawrence made them pay with a slam to leftfield -- her third home run this season.
Freshman catcher Alex Sobczak also homered in the contest with a leadoff no-doubter in the second inning. Like the other three, Sobczak's ball sailed deep over the leftfield wall as U-M benefited all game from a breeze heading out.
Michigan scored its first run on a bases-loaded walk in the first, and the Hoosiers matched U-M one-for-one through the opening two frames, scoring off an RBI double in the first and RBI single in the second.
The Wolverines took the lead for good off an RBI single from sophomore designated player Amanda Vargas in the third. Montemarano led off the inning with a triple high off the wall in leftfield, and Vargas promptly sent her home, dropping a chopped single just fair beyond first base.
Senior RHP Sara Driesenga (13-0) went the distance to stay unbeaten on the season, allowing four runs off of 11 hits and no walks. She struck out five.
MIGHTY MIGHTY MONTE! No-doubt GRAND SLAM to leftfield breaks this game wide open. Her 8th HR this season. 8-2 U-M. https://t.co/QvOVIQl1IQ
