INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Led by strong performances from its second varsity four and first varsity eight crews, the University of Michigan rowing team finished in third place at the 2016 Big Ten Championships today (Sunday, May 15) at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Indiana.
With heats cancelled on Saturday (May 14) due to high winds in the area, an all-final Sunday morning led to exciting races. Ohio State earned the conference championship, but many of the seven races came right down to the finish line.
Michigan's second varsity four boat earned an individual boat title to highlight the day, the first varsity four title for any Michigan four crew since 2013 (2V4). In a dominant performance, the 2V4 boat -- Olivia Chapman (c), Grace Gagliardi, Kathryn Grotto, Mallory Jamett and Lauren Gilbert -- took an open water lead through the first 1,000 meters of the race and extended their margin with a strong finish to earn the win in 7:06.826, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Ohio State.
In the first race of the day, Michigan's first varsity eight crew gave Ohio State's top-ranked 1V8 boat everything it could handle, closing hard in the final 500 meters to nearly pull ahead of the Buckeyes. A photo finish decided the race, with the Wolverines just coming up on the short end by .072 seconds, as Michigan's 1V8 crew -- Francesca Derteano (c), Louisa Freeman, Kaitlin Wright, Kendall Brewer, Tessa Yurko, Shayla Lamb, Lexie Beemer, Meghan Gutknecht and Felicity Cain -- finished in 6:22.794.
In other results, Michigan's second varsity eight crew took fourth place in 6:32.988, just over two seconds behind second place Wisconsin, and 1.8 seconds behind third place Indiana. The U-M 1V4 finished in third place in 7:15.927, just 1.7 seconds behind Wisconsin for second place.
Michigan's 3V4 also had a close finish, leading for the first 1,000 meters of its race before battling Ohio State in the final stages of the race. The Wolverines finished second in that race in 7:17.114, less than .5 seconds behind the Buckeyes.
In novice racing, the Wolverines' first novice eight crew took second place in 6:47.773, while the second novice eight finished in third place in 6:59.725.
Michigan will await the NCAA Rowing Selection Show on Tuesday (May 17) at 5 p.m., which will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
