ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a pair of goals from senior Nicky Waldeck, the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned its first win of the season, defeating Marshall, 4-1, on Sunday (Aug. 21) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines finished their opening weekend of the 2016 season with a 1-0-1 record after playing to a 2-2 tie with Pittsburgh on Friday (Aug. 19).
Waldeck's two goals are her most since she recorded a hat trick against Nebraska on Oct. 2, 2014, and mark the third multi-goal game of her career. The last time U-M scored four goals in one game was Oct. 5, 2014, against Iowa (W, 4-2).
Michigan jumped to an early lead, scoring two goals within 45 seconds of each other. The first goal came just 8:16 into the match from senior/junior Ani Sarkisian. Sophomore Jackie White played fellow classmate Abby Kastroll a ball on the right wing, and Kastroll played a low driven ball across to Sarkisian, who hammered it home.
Shortly after, at 9:01, Kastroll created another scoring opportunity for the Wolverines. She chipped the ball over Marshall's last line of defense and Waldeck ran into it and one-timed it past Marshall goalkeeper Emily Moreland.
The Wolverines continued to dominate the first half, scoring a third goal in the 30th minute. Sarkisian slotted the ball up the middle to freshman Brooke DeSantis, who beat Moreland one-on-one to record her first career goal.
Immediately after DeSantis' goal, Marshall got its best look of the half, as Ashley Seltzer took a shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar in the 30th minute. In the 41st minute, Marshall's Sydney Arnold let one rip from the top of the box, but junior/sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Jackson fell on the low driven ball to maintain the first-half shutout.
After a slow start to the second half, things heated up in the 52nd minute when Waldeck chipped one over Moreland's head, but a Herd defender chased down the ball and cleared it away just before it crossed the goal line. In the 56th minute, Marshall finally broke through, as Arnold carried the ball down the field and laid the ball off to Jordan Sackaris, who scored to make it a 3-1 game.
In the 81st minute, sophomore Reilly Martin served a corner kick to the back post, where Waldeck headed it in for her second goal of the game.
Kastroll finished the game with two assists, a feat that was last completed by Sarkisian on Sept. 4, 2015, against Portland (W, 5-0).
Overall, the Wolverines were slightly edged in shots, 13-11, but U-M topped the Herd in corner kicks, 5-0.
Jackson earned her first start of the season in net, while sophomore Jackie White made her first career start today in the midfield. Senior/junior Alyssa Herwatt and freshman Grace Salvino made their career debuts in maize and blue.
Next up, the Wolverines will wrap up a three-game homestand when they host Notre Dame on Thursday (Aug. 25) in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at U-M Soccer Stadium. The game will be televised on BTN. Tickets for that match are available by visiting the women's soccer ticket page.
