MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2016 season after conceding two second-half goals to fall to Marquette, 2-1, on Sunday (Aug. 28) at Valley Field. Senior/junior Ani Sarkisian netted U-M's lone goal in the first half and now leads the Maize and Blue with eight points this season on three goals and two assists.
The Wolverines got on the board first in the 35th minute as Sarkisian and senior Melissa Kreutz connected on a give-and-go. Junior/sophomore Sarah Jackson punted a long ball to the left flank in Michigan's attacking third -- Sarkisian settled the ball and carried it to the middle, where she found Kreutz at the top of the box -- Kreutz played it back to Sarkisian, and she created enough separation from two defenders and fired a shot into the upper right 90.
Marquette held a slight 5-4 lead in shots at the half, but the Wolverines owned a 1-0 lead. Jackson made all three of her saves in the first half to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless through the first 45 minutes.
Marquette got a chance to tie the game in the 51st minute as senior defender Rosalind Porritt inadvertently took down a Golden Eagle player in the box. Morgan Proffitt stepped to the penalty spot and knocked it in the right side of the goal to make it a 1-1 game.
In the 68th minute, Marquette was awarded a free kick on the left flank in its attacking third. Emily Hess lofted a long ball to the back post, and Molly Pfeiffer ran onto it and headed it in to put Marquette up 2-1.
Michigan drew three corner kicks in the final 20 minutes and got off five shots, including two on goal, but MU goalkeeper Maddy Henry saved both to help preserve the lead for Marquette.
Today's match ended similarly to when the two teams met a year ago in Ann Arbor. U-M held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal from Sarkisian, but the Golden Eagles notched two second-half goals just 34 seconds apart to earn a 2-1 win.
The Wolverines will return home to host Ole Miss on Friday (Sept. 2) at 8 p.m. The match is the second game of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team, which will play Columbia at 4 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
