ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Siera Thompson went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the closing 15 seconds, and the defense got the stops it needed as the University of Michigan women's basketball team hung on for a 78-74 win over Indiana on Tuesday evening (Jan. 10) inside Crisler Center.
Sophomore Hallie Thome turned in her third double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points on 9-for-11 shooting to go with 11 rebounds. Junior Katelynn Flaherty turned in 17 points and four assists, with freshman Kysre Gondrezick going for 17 points and eight assists. Thompson rounded out U-M's double-figure scorers with 10 points, with junior Jillian Dunston going for eight points and nine rebounds.
Indiana cut Michigan's lead to just two points, 74-72, with 52 seconds left following a layup from Jenn Anderson. Flaherty's jumper on Michigan's ensuing possession rimmed out, giving Indiana back the possession. U-M forced a turnover with 15 seconds remaining, and Thompson hit four straight free throws in the final seconds to give Michigan the win.
Out of halftime, Indiana tied the contest at 37-37 with 8:26 to go in the third quarter, but Michigan ripped off a 10-2 run for a 47-39 lead, getting eight from Gondrezick and two from Dunston for the eight-point lead at the 6:41 mark.
Michigan's lead swelled to as many as 10 in the period, but Indiana always answered. Thompson found Gondrezick for a left-wing triple to just beat the third-quarter clock, sending U-M to the fourth with a 64-55 lead.
U-M held a nine-point lead, 71-62, with 5:23 to go, but Indiana countered and closed to within two points to set up the final sequence.
Michigan went on an 8-0 run in the middle of the second quarter, getting points from Thompson, Dunston and Flaherty during the spurt for its largest lead of the contest, 37-25, with 3:09 left before the half. Indiana ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to cut Michigan's lead to five, 37-32, heading into the break.
