STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Sophomore Jack Hallahan scored with 37 seconds left in the second overtime session to lift the No. 20 University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions Sunday (Oct. 1) at PSU's Jeffrey Field.
The match looked to be going to a 1-1 draw; however, a moment of sheer brilliance from Hallahan proved to be the difference. With just over 40 seconds to go, he collected a ball at the top of the box, cut on his left, and then struck a brilliant ball that went bar down for the golden goal to give U-M the 2-1 extra-time victory.
Michigan (6-3-2, 3-1-1 Big Ten) dominated the possession and chances early on, outshooting the Nittany Lions 6-0 in the first 25 minutes. However, PSU's Ethan Beckford cashed in on PSU's first shot of the match at the 25:36 mark with a goal from in close to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions (2-6-2, 0-4-0 Big Ten).
With an 8-4 shot advantage entering the half, U-M continued to boss possession and chances, owning a 12-5 shot margin with 20 minutes to play. U-M's persistence paid off in the 70th minute, as sophomore Jack Hallahan struck a guided low-cross from the left flank. The pristine service found a streaking freshman Mohammed Zakyi, who capitalized in close to knot the contest at 1-1.
With Michigan owning a 16-7 margin in shots, the match went into overtime knotted at the 1-1 score line. In the first five minutes, U-M had three corners. The last of them was headed by Zakyi at the top of the six but went off the crossbar. With two minutes to go in the initial extra session, freshman Umar Farouk Osman linked up with Zakyi, but his try went off the post to send the match into overtime session number two.
