WESTFIELD, Ind. -- The top-seeded University of Michigan men's soccer fell to the fifth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers by a 4-0 score line in the semifinals of the 2017 Big Ten Soccer Tournament on Friday (Nov. 10) at Grand Park.
With the defeat, the Big Ten regular-season champion Wolverines (12-5-2) set their sights on the NCAA Tournament selection show, which will take place Monday (Nov. 13) at 1 p.m. via NCAA.com.
The Wolverines started off with a 5-0 shot advantage before the Badgers (10-4-4) were able to muster a chance. Prime opportunities came via headers from junior Daniel Mukuna in the sixth minute and classmate Ivo Cerda in the 22nd minute as the Wolverines were able to control the ball as well as the flow of the match.
Wisconsin took the lead against the run of play in the 29th minute, as Chris Mueller dropped in a set piece inside the area. A Wisconsin attacker took out U-M goalkeeper Henry Mashburn, and the resulting ball was put home by Mark Segbers as U-M fell behind, 1-0.
With minutes to go in the opening half, Michigan was afforded a golden chance off a set piece by freshman Marc Ybarra that found the foot of Mukuna, but the chance rang off the crossbar as the match went into the break with U-M chasing a goal.
A turning point in the match came in the 72nd minute, as a Badger giveaway resulted in a mini-breakaway for freshman Mohammed Zakyi, but the chance was turned away. On the ensuing counterattack, the Badgers made the score 2-0.
Wisconsin went on to add a pair of markers over the final 18 minutes to put away the match.
The Wolverines outshot the Badgers, 20-9, on the afternoon, including a 9-3 margin in the first half. Forwards Zakyi and Francis Atuahene paced the Wolverines with four shots apiece.
