
Wolverines to Host Southern Miss in Final Tune-Up Before Maui Trip

» Michigan plays its third game in a six-day span hosting Southern Miss.

» U-M junior Moritz Wagner has posted back-to-back double-doubles to start the season and is averaging 14.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

In a final tune-up before leaving for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, the University of Michigan men's basketball team (2-0) will play its third game in six days, hosting Southern Miss (1-0) at Crisler Center, Thursday night (Nov. 16) at 7 p.m. on BTN-Plus.
LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
• Southern Miss opened the season with a 79-69 victory over Southern-New Orleans on Nov. 10. Tyree Griffin led the Golden Eagles with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
• Dominic Magee added 15 points in the season-opening win, while Tim Rowe and Cortez Edwards each scored 10 points.
• The Golden Eagles have a pair of Division I transfers who are eligible this season after sitting out the 2016-17 season. Dominic Magee joins Southern Miss from Grand Canyon while Tyree Griffin began his college career at Oklahoma State.
• Junior guard Cortez Edwards is the leading returning scorer for Southern Miss at 11.2 points per game, Edwards also averaged 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season.
• Doc Sadler is beginning his fourth season as head coach at Southern Miss. Sadler had previously been the head coach at Nebraska for six seasons (2006-12).
• This will be the first meeting between Michigan and Southern Miss.
BEFORE THE GAME
• Thursday night's game will complete a season-opening three-games-in-six-day span.
• The Wolverines will fly out Friday morning at 8 a.m. for the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, where they will play three games in three days prior to Thanksgiving.
• Moritz Wagner has recorded two straight double-doubles to open the season. He posted 18 points and a career-best 12 boards in the opener against North Florida and followed with a 10-point, 11-rebound effort against Central Michigan. He has doubled his career total after only posting one in his prior two seasons.
• After a career-best nine assists in the opener against North Florida, Zavier Simpson followed with a career-high 13 points against Central Michigan.
• Jon Teske has come off the bench in the first two games to spell Wagner. He has already scored more points in his two games (6) than all of last season (5).
• All five starters scored in double figures against Central Michigan, led by Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman's season-best 17.
• A staple of U-M head coach John Beilein's programs, the Wolverines have had just 16 turnovers over the first two games, with a season-low six (6) against Central Michigan.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
• Following the fast and furious start to the season, Michigan departs early Friday morning for the 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational, Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 20-22, at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui. U-M is making its third trip to the Hawai'i tournament hosted by DIII Chaminade.
• Following the flight back on Thanksgiving night and into Friday, the Wolverines will host UC Riverside on Sunday, Nov. 26, at Crisler Center at 4 p.m. (FS1) before heading out to play defending national champion North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
