ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was trailing by just two goals at halftime, but was outscored 7-2 in the second half, and eventually fell to No. 8 Notre Dame, 12-5, on Saturday (Feb. 18) inside Michigan Stadium.
Anna Schueler led the Wolverines for the third straight game with three points, on two goals and one assist, while Allie Breitfeller, Jess Angerman and Tess Korten each added one goal apiece. Goalie Alli Kothari earned her second career start in cage, making a career-high nine saves, and recording four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The first half was a back and forth battle with Notre Dame scoring the first two goals within two minutes of each other, the first at 24:20 and the second at 22:55. The Wolverines fired back a minute later, as Korten roll-dodged her defender, curled around the crease and shot high to put the Maize and Blue on the board.
U-M quickly tied the game at the 17-minute mark with a man-up goal. From the top of the 12, Korten made a direct pass to Breitfeller cutting through the eight-meter arc for the quick score. Michigan then took the lead for the first time in the game when Schueler hit Angerman off a free-position situation for the left-handed goal.
The Fighting Irish fired back with three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, including Cortney Fortunato's second free-position goal to end the half. The Wolverines trailed 5-3 heading into the break.
Michigan scored just 51 seconds into the second half as Korten found Schuler for her first goal of the afternoon to bring the Wolverines within one point of the Irish, 5-4.
Notre Dame answered back with three goals in less than two minutes to take an 8-4 lead with 22:29 remaining. Schueler scored an unassisted goal at 17:39 to slow Notre Dame's momentum, and make it a three-goal game, but the Irish scored the last four goals of the game, making it a 7-1 Irish run to close the game. Kothari made six of her nine saves in the second half to keep the Wolverines in it.
Overall, Michigan won the draw-control battle, 11-8, with Schueler pulling down five to give her 13 on the season. Gabby Burns and Madison Richardson each earned their first career starts today, playing significant minutes for the Wolverines, while Adriana Pendino, Becca Marchant, and Kelly Schlansker each made their first appearance of the season, and Caroline Muller made her career debut in Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines will wrap up a three-game homestand when they host San Diego State Friday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. inside Oosterbaan Field House.
