
Wolverines Cap Homestand with Setback to San Diego State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team outscored San Diego State, 4-3, in the second half, but could not overcome an 8-3 halftime deficit, falling to the Aztecs, 11-7, on Friday (Feb. 24) inside Oosterbaan Field House.
Sophomore/freshman Adriana Pendino scored the first two goals of her Michigan career to lead the way for the Wolverines, while five others tallied one goal.
San Diego State opened all scoring with a free-position goal at 26:38, and then senior Anna Schueler answered right back to tie the game, driving down the middle for U-M's first goal of the day at the 25:36 mark. After the Aztecs went up 2-1, Pendino netted her first career goal on a free-position attempt with 19:53 left in the first half.
SDSU's Alex Watson then scored two straight goals less than 30 seconds apart. Senior Tess Korten slowed San Diego State's momentum with a free-position goal at 17:28, but Watson added two more goals to put the Aztecs up 6-3 with 5:02 to go in the first half. Overall, SDSU closed the half on a 4-0 run to hold an 8-3 advantage at the break.
Watson added her fifth of the day to start the second half and San Diego State took its largest lead of the day, 9-3, at 28:26. Senior Allie Breitfeller and Pendino scored back-to-back goals in 49 seconds to make it a four-goal game, 9-5, and force SDSU to call timeout at 24:01.
Following an Aztec goal at 21:43, senior Natalie Carti tallied her first goal of the season (12:35), and then freshman Chandler Kirby followed five minutes later with her first career goal in Maize and Blue (7:10). Michigan pulled within three goals, 10-7, but San Diego State scored the final goal of the game with 1:31 remaining and ran out the clock down the stretch to preserve its first win of the season.
In cage, sophomore Mira Shane earned the start for U-M, making five saves, before sophomore/freshman Alli Kothari entered the game for the final 36 minutes and made four saves. Aztec goalie Katrina Reeves made 12 stops for San Diego State.
The Wolverines won the draw-controls battle for the third time in four games, 12-8, with Schueler grabbing a game-high five. Schueler now leads Michigan with 18 draw controls this season.
The Wolverines will now head to the west coast for its 2017 spring trip, where they will play Stanford (Tuesday, Feb. 28) and California (Friday, March 3). The Stanford game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. PST.
