SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team picked up the doubles point and five out of six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over Cal Poly in the first match of its week-long trip to California.
The duo of Jathan Malik and Connor Johnston picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while the tandem of Alex Knight and Runhao Hua clinched the first point of the afternoon for U-M with a 6-3 victory at No. 2.
After doubles play, the Wolverines picked up their second and third points as Kevin Wong earned the win at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2) and Hua put them on the brink of the team victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5.
Carter Lin clinched the match for the Maize and Blue in a three-set triumph in the No. 6 position, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Cal Poly picked up its first and lone point of the afternoon with a three-set win by Ben Donovan at No. 2.
Michigan's final two points of the match were courtesy of wins at No. 1 by Malik (7-6, 4-6, 6-3) and No. 3 by Knight (6-3, 4-6, 7-6).
Up next on the western swing, Michigan will take on California Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 28) and then wrap up the trip with a neutral-site match against Oklahoma State on Thursday (March 2).
