FULLERTON, Calif. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan softball team wrapped up its annual appearance at the Judi Garman Classic with its most dominant win of the tournament, cruising to a 13-5, five-inning decision over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon (March 4) at CSU Fullerton's Anderson Family Field.
Michigan registered 12 hits and eight walks to match its season-high run total and plated multiple runs in three of five innings to secure its fifth run-rule victory of the season. Four Wolverines tallied two hits, notably junior designated player Amanda Vargas and senior third baseman Lindsay Montemarano, who also posted an RBI apiece.
Junior first baseman Aidan Falk headlined a four-run first inning for the Wolverines with a three-run, bases-clearing double to the leftfield wall. Michigan drew four walks in the first frame, with freshman leftfielder Haley Hoogenraad earning an easy RBI for the first of her career. She added another on her first collegiate hit -- a single to centerfield -- in the second. Hoogenraad's RBI single was the last of five base hits in the second frame as U-M quickly padded its lead to run-rule territory.
Senior RHP Megan Betsa (5-4), who struck out seven while allowing two hits and a walk through four innings, lost her no-hit bid on a one-out single up the middle in the top of the third. Betsa hit the next batter to advance the runner into scoring position but responded with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Michigan lost its run-rule margin after a pitching change resulted in five runs for Long Beach State in the top of the fifth, but the Wolverines promptly reestablished it with a three-spot in the home half. With the bases loaded, junior third baseman Taylor Swearingen doubled off the leftfield wall, and freshman rightfielder Thais Gonzalez followed with a game-ending line-drive single.
The Wolverines (12-6-1) will wrap up their non-conference tournament schedule next weekend, heading south to Lexington, Kentucky, for the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 11-12) at John Cropp Stadium. Michigan will face Evansville (10 a.m.) and Dayton (noon) on Saturday and conclude play against Kent State (noon) and host Kentucky (2 p.m.) on Sunday.
