NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Michigan senior RHP Megan Betsa and senior outfielder Kelly Christner were selected in the 2017 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) College Draft this evening (Monday, April 24) at Acme Feed & Seed. Betsa, the No. 7 overall pick, went to the Akron Racers organization, while Christner will join fellow Wolverines Sierra Romero (2013-16) and Jordan Taylor (2008-11) with the USSSA Pride.
Betsa, a two-time NFCA All-American and two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year (2015, '16), leads the nation with 357 strikeouts, having posted double-digit strikeouts in each of her last six starts, and is the first Wolverine player to post three 300-strikeout seasons. She ranks third in program history with 1,123 career strikeouts. Over her four-year tenure, Betsa has compiled a 96-21 career record, a 1.77 earned run average and 35 complete-game shutouts. She has tossed five career no-hitters, including two this season -- against Kent State (March 18) and Penn State (March 26).
Christner, selected fifth in the fourth round with the No. 20 overall pick, is an NFCA first-team All-American (2015) and leads the Wolverines with a .408 batting average, .608 slugging percentage and .526 on-base percentage. She boasts a .360 career average with 36 home runs, 152 runs batted in and 179 runs scored.
Betsa and Christner are the 14th and 15th players in Michigan program history to be drafted in the professional league. Five Wolverines currently play in the NPF: Romero, Taylor, RHP Sara Driesenga (2012-16, Scrap Yard Dawgs), Lauren Sweet (2012-15, Dallas Charge) and LHP Haylie Wagner (2012-14, Chicago Bandits).
