LAINGSBURG, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan rowing team earned team victories over No. 11 Wisconsin and Minnesota on the strength of six race wins from the varsity boats during Saturday's (April 8) Big Ten Double Dual on Lake Ovid.
The 1V8 boat led the way with a 2-0 record and 36 points, and matching marks from the 2V8 (24 points) and 1V4 (12 points) crews paced the scoring for U-M, but it was a true team effort and the overall week-to-week improvement remains this team's focus. On that front, head coach Mark Rothstein was pleased.
"At this point in the season, we're focused on getting faster each week and growing and learning from our races," he said. "But you always want to win, especially against conference rivals. We had a good day. We showed toughness and rowed with a lot of heart."
Weather for the Big Ten showdown hosted by Michigan State was warm and sunny with light cloud coverage, and 8-12 mph cross-tailwinds moved across the water during the first scored regatta of the season for the Wolverines. Temperatures crept into the high 50s and low 60s by the afternoon.
In the morning session, Michigan's 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 boats swept Minnesota head-to-head to collect 36 points, and the 2V4 and 3V4 finished second to Wisconsin. The margin was particularly tight for Wisconsin in the 3V4 race, with the Badgers timing 7.24.64 and winning by +0.3 seconds.
But the best performance for U-M in the early session was the 1V8 boat's time of 6:28.01, which earned a win of +16.42 over Minnesota and was the fastest boat all morning.
The first novice eight boat also picked up a win in the morning against Minnesota, finishing in 6:44.53, and U-M closed the morning session with 44 points to Minnesota's 20, doubling up the Golden Gophers.
For the afternoon races, the Wolverines picked up another three wins over a stiffer opponent in the Badgers. U-M's 1V8 boat recorded the fastest race of the day in 6:21.59 (+5.08), and the 2V8 boat finished a perfect day of its own, crossing the finish line in 6:23.57 (+1.28) with the second-fastest time of the day.
The 1V4 boat scored another win, this time over the Badgers in 7:06.99 (+1.33), and U-M's 2V4 and 3V4 boats again took second place to UW in their races.
The 1N8 boat ended a 2-0 weekend as well, besting Wisconsin by +8.09 seconds, and Michigan matched its morning score of 44 points, coming out 16 points ahead of Wisconsin (28).
