SEATTLE, Wash. -- Senior RHP Megan Betsa tossed a 13-strikeout no-hitter to lead the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan softball team to a 4-0 win against Fresno State in an NCAA Regional elimination game on Saturday night (May 20) at Washington's Husky Softball Stadium. It is the Wolverines' second win against FSU in as many days.
Betsa (25-9) was just two walks shy of a perfect game, settling instead for her third no-hitter of the season and sixth of her career. It is also the second NCAA Tournament no-hitter for a Wolverine hurler, joining Jennie Ritter's 2006 effort against Youngstown State.
Betsa, who posted double-digit strikeouts for the 21st time this season, also surpassed 400 strikeouts on the year, joining Ritter as the only two Michigan pitchers to achieve the feat. Ritter owns the top two spots on the single-season record board with 451 (2006) and 417 (2005).
The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and one apiece in the second and third. Junior Aidan Falk headlined U-M's offensive effort with two hits and three RBI, including a two-run homer to right centerfield -- her seventh long ball of the season -- in the first frame.
Senior centerfielder Kelly Christner smacked an RBI single up the middle in the second, and Falk recorded her third RBI with a double to the right-center wall in the third to cushion the Wolverine lead.
Fresno State did not earn its first base runner until drawing a one-out walk in the fourth and added a two-out base on balls in the fifth. Betsa used strikeouts to end both innings and tacked on three more over the final two frames, including a four-pitch effort to close out the contest.
Michigan will face No. 6 seed Washington at 4 p.m. PDT tomorrow (Sunday, May 21) in the NCAA Regional final at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle, Washington, with a 6:30 p.m. PDT "if-necessary" game. The Wolverines must win two to advantage to the Super Regional.
