PRINCETON, N.J. -- Rising senior Kendall Brewer was named to the U.S. Under-23 Rowing Team for the World Rowing U-23 Championships, the United States Rowing Association announced on Tuesday (June 27).
This marks Brewer's fourth consecutive summer competing for the U.S. National Team. She earned her spot on the roster after having been teamed with the University of Washington's Brooke Pierson in a pairs boat. On Tuesday's second day of racing at the 2017 Under-23 and Under-19 World Championship Trials, Brewer and Pierson won the pair final and became the first women to earn their spots on the team poised for international competition.
Along with Wolverines Meghan Gutknecht and Kalia Krichko, Brewer and Pierson were among the many rowers who have spent the past month participating in a selection camp at Princeton University.
Brewer and Pierson were matched together at camp and are being coached in this process by three-time U-23 Selection Camp coach Wesley Ng. The duo timed 7:29.47 in Tuesday's race to earn their spots on the team.
Brewer will look to add to what is already a crowded trophy case as she has had a decorated international career so far. Last summer, Brewer helped win gold medals in the eight and the four at these same World Championships, and she earned a fourth-place finish in the quad race at the 2015 championships. Brewer's first time competing for the U.S. National Team was in the 2013 season when she helped win gold in the quadruple sculls.
She represents Michigan's most decorated returning athlete looking ahead to the 2017-18 season. Brewer is a two-time Pocock All-American (first team, 2017; second team, 2016), three-time All-CRCA honoree (second team, 2015; first team, 2016-17) and two-time All-Big Ten selection (first team, 2016-17)
The full U.S. Under-23 National Team will be named on July 7, 2017. The World Rowing Under-23 Championships will be held July 19-23 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
