ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department has launched a new youth program designed to engage youth in and around Washtenaw County and expose them to a variety of sports.
The Passport Program is a free program and open to kids in grades 8 and below as well as existing Kids Go Blue Club members. The goal of the program is to encourage kids to explore different areas of athletics and to offer a no-cost, fun, family activity for the long winter months.
The University of Michigan will be providing "passports" that kids can take with them to eligible sporting events. At each event, participants will receive a punch that counts toward prizes for the duration of the program. Children who attend one of each eligible sporting event will be entered to win a grand prize.
Passports can be picked up at any eligible event and will also be distributed at participating schools. Seventeen schools in Dexter and Saline have already joined the program.
"It is so exciting to have community partners like the University of Michigan interested in offering unique opportunities to Dexter families," said Chris Timmis, superintendent of the Dexter Community Schools.
Laura Washington, principal of Heritage School in Saline, is also excited about the opportunity. "I am hoping that students are exposed to a wide array of sports and see that there is diversity in athletics! I am very excited about partnering with the University of Michigan; we are so fortunate to have a wonderful resource with high-caliber athletes and programs!"
