ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A 320-yard rushing performance and a dominant pass defense helped lead the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan football team to a 38-13 victory over No. 15 Wisconsin on Saturday (Oct. 13) under the lights at Michigan Stadium.
Running back Karan Higdon and quarterback Shea Patterson combined to rush for 195 of MIchigan's 320 yards. Patterson did the bulk of his damage in the first half, collecting 81 yards on a run down the left sideline to set up the Wolverine's first touchdown. He finished 14-of-21 passing for 124 yards and had 90 rushing yards on nine carries. Higdon shouldered the rushing load in the second half, gaining 94 of his 105 yards over the final 30 minutes.
The U-M defense did not allow a pass completion on the Badgers' first eight attempts in the second half as Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook finished just 7-of-20 for 100 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Josh Metellus intercepted Hornibrook off a tipped pass by David Long and set up a 33-yard field goal by Quinn Nordin. The second interception was a 21-yard return for a touchdown by Lavert Hill.
Hornibrook suffered just his second career road loss, falling to 11-2. Both of his losses have come at Michigan Stadium. He is a combined 16-for-45 for 188 yards and five interceptions in those two losses.
Michigan held Wisconsin to 283 yards of total offense, more than 100 yards short of its previous season low (394 in a loss to BYU). The 100 passing yards are also a season low. Jonathan Taylor, the nation's leading rusher, was held to 101 yards on 17 carries -- 68 yards below his season average.
The opening drive of the second half was a key drive in the game. Michigan led, 13-7, at halftime and was able to extend the lead to 21-7 after two penalties by the Badgers helped extend the drive. A defensive holding penalty and roughing the snapper penalty on a punt allowed U-M to keep its drive alive. Patterson finished off the drive with a seven-yard rushing touchdown, then completed a crossing pass to Nico Collins in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion.

From that point on, the Wolverines added a field goal and two touchdowns to build a 38-7 lead. The touchdowns were the 21-yard pick-six by Hill and a 44-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, the first of his career. Wisconsin scored a touchdown with 3:47 remaining in the game to make the final score 38-13.
Patterson's 81-yard run in the first quarter helped set up the first score of the game and is the second longest by a quarterback in Michigan's history. Only Denard Robinson's 87-yard run against Notre Dame in 2010 was longer. Higdon punched it in from two yards out for his sixth rushing touchdown of the season as U-M took a 7-0 advantage.
Wisconsin answered on the following drive, marching the ball down the field with four consecutive rushes totaling 71 yards. The drive took 2:07 off the clock and was capped by a 33-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Kendric Pryor.
Outside of the one Badgers scoring drive, Michigan's top-ranked defense held Wisconsin to 56 yards on 20 plays in the first half, including just 25 passing yards. Devin Bush and Josh Uche each came through with third-down sacks.
The Wolverines built a six-point lead by halftime with two consecutive field goals by Nordin, who finished with three made field goals in the game.
Michigan improved to 5-0 at home, 4-0 in the Big Ten and 6-1 overall. The Wolverines will be on the road in East Lansing, Michigan, next Saturday (Oct. 20) for a noon kickoff at Michigan State, and the game will be televised on Fox.
