ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Big Ten foe Maryland Thursday evening (Oct. 18) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines used a season-high 22 shots, 14 of which reached net, to capture the victory. The shot total surpasses Michigan's previous season best of 20 against Central Michigan (Sept. 7, 2018).
Michigan's first goal was recorded as an own goal when Nicki Hernandez fired a shot that deflected off a Maryland defender from three yards out and into the back of the net to tie the score at 1. Sarah Stratigakis is now tied for the team lead with seven goals after scoring the game-winner late in the second half. Senior Jackie White earned her first point of the season when she assisted on Stratigakis' goal.
The Michigan defense held Maryland to just seven shots, with only three reaching net. Sophomore Hillary Beall earned the win in goal, making two saves for the Wolverines.
Michigan peppered the net in the first 20 minutes of the match taking six shots, five of which were on goal. The Wolverines continued to pressure the Terrapin back line, putting one final shot on net and taking 11 total shots in the first 45 minutes of action. Maryland managed three shots in the half with Beall making one save.
The Terrapins placed a corner in the middle of the box early in the second half that was brought down by Alyssa Poarch and lifted into the upper half of the net to allow Maryland to take a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.
Minutes later, Michigan knotted the score at 1 when Hernandez fired a shot that deflected off a Maryland defender into the back of the net from three yards out for an own goal.
The Wolverines found their opportunity to go up over the Terrapins in the 67th minute as White brought the ball up the field, dribbled the ball for five steps and then passed it up to Stratigakis, who took one touch and shot the ball past the keeper to give Michigan a 2-1 lead.
Michigan saw one final chance to score when a White shot went off the far-left post in the closing minutes of the second half. The Wolverine defense did not allow Maryland to generate any further offense, going on to victory.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday (Oct. 21) when they welcome Michigan State for a 2 p.m. contest at U-M Soccer Stadium. Prior to the match against the Spartans, Michigan will honor the careers of its six seniors.
