The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team (1-2-0) is set to host St. Lawrence (1-3-0) this weekend (Oct. 26-27) for two games at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan will be hosting its annual ALS Awareness Game on Friday (Oct. 26) as the program shows its support of former Michigan hockey player Scott Matzka (1997-2001) in his fight against ALS.
The St. Lawrence Series
Michigan and St. Lawrence meet for the 17th time in program history, with the series dating back to its start in 1952. The Wolverines lead the overall series 13-2-1, with a 7-0-0 record at Yost, and have won each of the last nine meetings. The two teams last met at St. Lawrence last year (Oct. 6, 2017) for the Wolverines' season opener. The 3-1 victory marked Mel Pearson's first win as head coach of the Michigan hockey team.
Scouting the Saints
Finishing at 8-27-2 (3-18-1 ECAC) last season, the Saints went 1-7-1 through the first month of the season but captured their seven other wins in the second half. Their year ended with a first-round playoff series loss at Dartmouth, as the Big Green edged the Saints in a decisive third game, 2-1.
The Saints graduated four of their top five leading scorers from the 2017-18 season but have added 10 first-years to the roster for the 2018-19 season. The class is composed of six forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender. Freshman addition David Jankowski was named the CCHL Player of the Year in 2017-18 after leading the league in scoring. The current St. Lawrence roster is composed of three seniors, four juniors, 11 sophomores and 10 freshmen.
St. Lawrence This Year
St. Lawrence travels to Ann Arbor after a 7-1 loss against Wisconsin this past Saturday (Oct. 20), with senior Michael Ederer scoring its only goal. The Saints have kicked off the 2018-19 season with a 1-3 record after opening their season with back-to-back loses against the University of Maine, before getting their first win of the season, 4-3, against Holy Cross.
Junior forwards Ryan Garvey (1G, 2A) and Carson Gicewicz (3A), along with sophomore defenseman Jake Stevens (1G, 2A) lead the Saints in points. Sophomore forward Keenan Suthers leads the Saints in scoring with two goals in the first four games. Senior netminder Arthur Brey recorded 23 saves during the 4-3 win against Holy Cross and has a .897 save percentage this season as the starting goaltender.
