ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team (2-2) came out on top in a 3-0 victory against St. Lawrence (1-4) on Friday night (Oct. 26) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
"Good solid effort from our team," said head coach Mel Pearson. "The power play was good again. Our power play has some skilled guys, so we need to keep taking advantage of those opportunities."
Michigan went on an early power play and was able to capitalize, going up 1-0 within the first three minutes of the contest. Junior forward Jake Slaker scored off a loose puck in front of a crowded net after a Josh Norris backhand shot for his second goal of the season.
Michigan had another man-advantage midway through the second period after St. Lawrence had too many men on the ice. Sophomore forward Michael Pastujov scored his second goal of the season off a rebound that bounced off the Saints goalie after a one-timer from his brother, Nick Pastujov, with 8:14 remaining in the second period. The goal extended the U-M lead to 2-0 heading into the final intermission.
The Maize and Blue continued to show its defensive strength, as they held the Saints to just three shots on goal in the final period, which was the lowest number allowed this season and the first time its happened since they held Arizona State to three shots in the opening period on Feb. 24, 2018.
The Wolverines were able to increase their lead to 3-0 when Slaker carried the puck up the boards and found a wide-open Norris in front of the net for his second goal of the season.
Junior Hayden Lavigne ended the night with 16 saves to record his first shutout of the season and sixth of his career.
"The shutout is big for the team's confidence," said Lavigne. "It's nice to come back with a solid performance like that defensively."
Michigan and St. Lawrence will wrap-up the weekend series Saturday night (Oct. 27) at Yost Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
