STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion when No. 16 Penn State scored in the 89th minute to secure a 1-0 win over the Wolverines in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday (Oct. 28) at Jeffrey Field.
"It was a tough loss," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "I thought our team performed well throughout the game and had our opportunities to win. I am proud of the work that this team has done. They truly have laid a great foundation for our program moving forward. It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine."
Michigan took 12 shots on the afternoon, putting eight on goal. Senior Reilly Martin led the Wolverines with three shots, two reaching goal, while Sarah Stratigakis, Katie Foug and Nicki Hernandez all had two shots for the Maize and Blue. Sophomore Hillary Beall made three saves in net against the Nittany Lions.
Marissa Sheva netted the game-winner for Penn State in the 89th minute off a perfectly placed cross from Ellie Jean. The Nittany Lions had 17 shots in total with four on goal. Amanda Dennis earned the win in net, making eight saves.
Michigan was awarded three consecutive corner kicks, taking two shots on the third attempt with a header being cleared and Ashley Calcagno's shot from outside the box being saved by Dennis in the 16th minute to keep the match scoreless.
The Wolverines were outshot, 8-4, in the opening 45 minutes with Beall making two saves. U-M put two of its four shots on net.
Penn State found the first chance of the half on a wide-open shot in the 18-yard box, but Beall picked up a big save to keep the match scoreless. Minutes later, U-M made a push of its own, taking four consecutive shots with one hitting the crossbar and Dennis making three straight saves.
The Wolverines continued to pressure offensively when Taylor Timko saw an open shot in the 79th minute that sailed just wide of the left goal post.
In the 89th minute of the match, a cross provided the one-timer opportunity for a breaking Sheva, who placed the ball into the upper-left corner of the net for the goal.
With six seconds left on the clock, Michigan earned a corner kick that was put inside the box. Foug ripped a shot on net in the final second, but a team save by the Nittany Lion defense prevented Michigan from tying the match.
The Wolverines conclude their season with a 9-9-1 overall record and a 5-5-1 record in Big Ten Conference play. Michigan topped one ranked opponent this season (No. 17 Wisconsin on Sept. 20), while Hernandez paced U-M with 22 points (eight goals, six assists), Stratigakis had 17 points, and Martin concluded her collegiate career with 21 goals and 24 assists, including six goals and four assists in her senior season.
