The 19th-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team continues its opening week of the regular season by hosting Holy Cross on Saturday night (Nov. 10) at Crisler Center. The matchup is part of the Basketball Hall of Fame's Tip-Off Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the game broadcast on BTN Plus.
A Little Bit About Holy Cross
• Holy Cross posted a 12-19 record in 2017-18, with an 8-10 mark in Patriot League play, finishing sixth in the conference. The Crusaders reached the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament.
• Senior Jehyve Floyd was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League team; he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game a season ago. Holy Cross was picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League Preseason poll.
• Holy Cross opened the 2018-19 season with a 93-81 victory against Sacred Heart before traveling to Michigan in its first game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
• Bill Carmody is entering his fourth season as the head coach at Holy Cross and guided the Crusaders to the NCAA Tournament during his first season in 2015-16. Carmody was the head coach at Northwestern for 13 seasons from 2000-13. The Wildcats posted an 8-16 record against Michigan during Carmody's tenure.
• This will be the fifth all-time meeting between U-M and Holy Cross. The Crusaders won the first meeting between the two schools, 63-45, in the 1948 NCAA Tournament (March 18, 1948). The second meeting also came in the NCAA Tournament, a 92-81 U-M win on March 13, 1977. The Wolverines won the most recent meeting, 88-66, on Dec. 28, 2013, in Ann Arbor.
Naismith Hall of Fame Tip-Off
• Michigan is part of the 2018 Naismith Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, which begins with two campus site games -- Norfolk State (W, 63-44 on Nov. 6) and Saturday (Nov. 10) against Holy Cross. Both campus opponents are part of the Springfield bracket, while U-M is in the Naismith bracket.
• After the pair of campus matchups, U-M will head to Uncasville, Connecticut, and the Mohegan Sun Casino and Arena for the Naismith Bracket matchup with George Washington (Nov. 17).
• The Wolverines will then play either Providence or South Carolina on Nov. 18 in the consolation or championship game.
Reaching 800!
• Already the Wolverines all-time winningest coach with 249 victories, U-M's 63-44 win over Norfolk State gave John Beilein his 800th win of his 41-year career patrolling the sidelines.
• Beilein currently has 800 victories, with 542 on the Division I level. If you add is 40 wins in his three years at Newfane High School, he has 840 total in his complete career.
• Did you know, Beilein has never been an assistant coach? His entire career has been as a head coach at all levels.
Wolverine Quick Notes
• Senior Charles Matthews and junior Zavier Simpson were selected team captains as voted by their teammates and coaching staff.
• U-M opened the season with a 63-44 victory against Norfolk State. As the Spartans switched defenses multiple times, U-M used an 11-0 early run to take the lead and slowly grind its way to the victory.
• U-M starting five for the opener included Zavier Simpson (four points, five rebounds and five assists), Jordan Poole (three points, five rebounds), Charles Matthews (10 points, seven rebounds), Ignas Brazdeikis (12 points, four rebounds) and Jon Teske (13 points, eight rebounds, four blocks).
• Isaiah Livers came off the bench and recorded eight points, eight rebounds, three assists (no turnovers) and two blocks. Additionally, Eli Brooks came off the bench for eight points, two rebounds and four assists (no turnovers).
