AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Ivo Cerda of the University of Michigan men's soccer team was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday (Dec. 6). Cerda was among the 12 student-athletes named to the first team, and is the first student-athlete in program history to receive the prestigious honor in back-to-back years.
To be eligible for initial selection, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in his second year at the current institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
A native of Santiago, Chile, Cerda was a four-year starter for the Wolverines, playing in 66 career matches (60 starts) for Michigan, with nine goals and five assists (23 points). A co-captain each of the last two seasons, Cerda started the first 13 matches of the 2018 season before suffering an injury in the opening minutes against Notre Dame on Oct. 16, which limited him to a reserve role in two of the team's final eight matches. He had two goals and two assists this season. For his career, he is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District Five selection and a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Cerda will graduate in the spring with a degree in cellular and molecular biology and plans to pursue a master's degree in biomedical engineering.
