
Wolverines Drop ITA Indoor Consolation Match to Auburn

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team took a 2-0 lead on No. 12-ranked Auburn, but the Tigers won four of the remaining five singles matches on court in a 4-3 Auburn win on Saturday (Feb. 10) in consolation action of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Michigan breezed to the doubles point, getting a 6-0 win at No. 1 from senior Alex Najarian and junior Kate Fahey, along with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 from junior Brienne Minor and senior Mira Ruder-Hook.
The Wolverines managed just two first-set wins in singles action, getting them from Fahey at No. 1 and sophomore Chiara Lommer at No. 2.
Fahey was first off court, getting a 6-0, 6-2 win at the top spot for the Maize and Blue. After getting through the first set without dropping a game, Fahey went down a break early in the second before storming back for the win.
The Tigers answered right back with straight-sets wins at No. 3 and No. 5 to tie the team match at 2.
Lommer came through with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2, using early leads in both sets to take the match for Michigan's third point of the evening.
Needing just one more point, Michigan had Ruder-Hook on court at No. 4 and freshman Bella Lorenzini at No. 6.
Ruder-Hook bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win the second, 6-2. She fell in a 3-0 hole to start the third but won two straight games to get back on serve at 3-2. She was broken in her service game and then Madeline Meredith held her next game, putting Ruder-Hook in a 5-2 hole. The senior once again came back, and won the next three games to tie the set at 5. Both players held their serve to send the third to a tiebreaker.
Lorenzini fought off two match points in the second set, sending it to a tiebreaker. She was down 2-0 before battling back for a 3-all tie at the changeover. The players exchanged points but Georgie Axon won the final three points, taking a 7-4 breaker win for Auburn's third point.
Ruder-Hook won the first point of her tiebreaker at No. 4, but dropped the next five points. She fought off one match point but fell, 7-3, in the tiebreaker moments after Lorenzini lost as Auburn put its fourth point on the board for the win.
Michigan will play one more consolation match at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 11).
