A trio of Wolverines with University of Michigan men's gymnastics ties are heading to the Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Nevada, from Thursday-Saturday (Feb. 15-17) at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. The event will be headlined by freshman Cameron Bock, as well as a pair of former Wolverines in Sam Mikulak (2011-14) and Adrian de los Angeles (2012-15). Mikulak and de los Angeles, competing for the U.S. Olympic Training Center squad, will partake in the all-around while Bock will compete on parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse, and still rings.
WOLVERINE BITES
• Bock has been a welcome addition to the lineup for the Wolverines, making his collegiate debut for Michigan against Oklahoma (Jan. 27). Against the Sooners, he finished second on pommel horse (13.550). He also placed second on high bar with a mark of 13.600 against Ohio State (Feb. 3). He will round into a key all-arounder later this season.
• The freshman also spent time at the USOTC with Mikulak and de los Angeles during his junior career, and took part in the 2017 P&G Championships as a senior competitor. Bock has an extensive record competing in national competitions, as he most recently took home the event title on parallel bars and two third-place finishes in the all-around and high bar events at the 2016 Junior Olympics. At the 2015 Junior Olympics, he won the all-around title and placed second on pommel horse and high bar.
• Most recently, Mikulak, the top U.S. gymnast over the past decade, competed in the Houston National Invitational (Feb. 2-4), and took event titles on rings (14.400), parallel bars (15.500), high bar (15.000) and all-around (84.200). The event was Mikulak's first time competing in the all-around after suffering an Achilles' heel injury at last year's Winter Cup.
• Mikulak earned a silver medal on pommel horse and a bronze medal on high bar at the 2017 World Championships. He finished seventh in the all-around at the 2016 Olympics after he became the 2016 U.S all-around champion; Mikulak was a silver medalist on pommel horse and parallel bars as well.
• De los Angeles competed in the 2017 P&G Championships and will return to the Winter Cup Challenge for the seventh time. He last competed at the Houston National Invitational (Feb. 2-4) and finished in the top five on three events. He placed fourth on pommel horse (13.800) and tied for fifth on vault (14.100) and high bar (13.300).
• Performances at the meet will help determine the 12 men who will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2018 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Boston, Aug. 16-19. The top-six ranked all-around athletes will automatically qualify for the 2018 senior national team. The Men's Program Committee will select six additional gymnasts from the participants at the Winter Cup Challenge or from petitions to the team.
