PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Led by strong outings from redshirt freshman Harrison Salter and sophomore Karl Kauffmann in their first career starts, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Army, 7-3, on Sunday (Feb. 18) to clinch the weekend series at First Data Field.
Michigan got on the board thanks to a two-out rally in the bottom of the first inning. Following back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame, junior Jonathan Engelmann got things started with a single to right-center field before a walk to sophomore Dominic Clementi put two men on. Sophomore Christan Bullock then came up with an RBI single through the right side to score Engelmann from second and give the Wolverines a 1-0 edge.
The Black Knights evened the score with an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Wolverines broke things open after a four-run fourth inning. Junior Jimmy Kerr led off the inning and reached on an error, and redshirt freshman Harrison Salter followed with a single through the right side. A bunt single by freshman Jack Blomgren then loaded the bases with no outs, and it was junior Ako Thomas who came up with the two-run double to left field. With two men still in scoring position and no outs on the board, redshirt junior Miles Lewis sent a two-run double to right field and extended Michigan's lead to 5-1.
Two scoreless innings later, Army rallied for a run in the top of the seventh, but Michigan responded with two runs on a double from Salter to force a 7-2 lead.
Army added an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but a fielder's choice ended the game and gave Michigan the win.
Sophomore Kauffmann took the mound in his first career start Sunday and tossed six innings to earn the win. He was charged with one run (unearned) and struck out three.
Junior right-handers Troy Miller and Jack Bredeson closed out the game. The duo combined to toss three innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits.
The Wolverines will travel to the West Coast on Friday (Feb. 23) when they take part in the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament. Michigan will first face off against San Diego at 6 p.m. PT on the campus of San Diego State University.
