Michigan Falls to Cal Poly in Tony Gwynn Legacy Finale

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Two hits by junior Ako Thomas and a lone run in the top of the eighth was not enough on Sunday morning (Feb. 26) as the University of Michigan baseball team dropped its Tony Gwynn Legacy finale contest to Cal Poly by an 8-1 decision at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Thomas led off with a double for Michigan in the top of the first inning, but the Wolverine offense stopped there.
With Michigan unable to convert with a runner in scoring position, the Mustangs took control of the momentum in the bottom of the first and plated five runs on five hits and a hit batter.
Cal Poly added runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings, forcing a defining 8-0 lead through seven complete.
After seven innings without a run, the Wolverines put one on the board in the top of the eighth inning. Junior Blake Nelson took first on a two-out walk, then recorded his first stolen base of the season to get into scoring position. Thomas followed with an RBI single to left-center field that scored Nelson from second and broke up the shutout.
Michigan threatened with two men on base in the top of the ninth, but a double play ended the game with the Mustangs on top, 8-1.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Karl Kauffmann took the loss in the Sunday matinee, allowing seven runs on nine hits before junior Troy Miller and redshirt sophomore Ben Keizer combined to close out the game in relief. The pair allowed one run on five hits.
The Wolverines will return to action on Monday (Feb. 26) for a game against San Diego State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. PST at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
