AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped the doubles point and could not turn the remaining singles matches in time as they fell, 4-0, to No. 14-ranked Texas on Sunday (March 11) at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Longhorns grabbed the early lead, winning at No. 3 and No. 1. Texas used quick starts at both No. 1 and No. 3 to take control early, racing out to 4-1 leads on both courts en route to winning the doubles point.
Michigan's No. 2 duo of junior Kate Fahey and freshman Alyvia Jones was up, 5-2, when the match was abandoned.
Texas continued its strong play into singles, winning all six first sets. UT extended its lead to 2-0 with a straight-sets win at No. 5.
The Longhorns put their third point on the board a little later with another straight-sets win at No. 2.
With a hill to climb, Michigan started to turn some of the matches in the second set to keep the Longhorns from quickly securing the fourth team point. Fahey and freshman Bella Lorenzini each went up a break early in their second sets, with Jones on serve through the first several games.
Jones could not complete the comeback at No. 4 after a late Texas break; she dropped her second set as Texas claimed its fourth point of the afternoon to clinch the match.
Michigan kicks off Big Ten action next weekend with a trip to Iowa on Friday (March 16) to take on the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. CDT. U-M will complete the weekend at Nebraska on Sunday (March 18) at 11 a.m. CDT.
