ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the indoor season now in the books, select members of the University of Michigan men's track and field team will compete Friday and Saturday (March 16-17) at the Miami (Fla.) Hurricane Invitational in the program's outdoor season debut.
Two-time All-American and Big Ten champion Taylor McLaughlin headlines a group of sprinters and jumpers who will kick of the Wolverines' spring campaign at Coral Gables this weekend. McLaughlin leads a corps of 13 Michigan men in six individual events and a relay.
High jumpers Alex Klemm and Brandon Piwinski are the lone Wolverines in action on Friday at 7 p.m., with the sprinters, hurdlers and long jumpers all competing Saturday starting at noon.
In preparation for his eventual 2018 debut in his signature outdoor 400-meter hurdles event, McLaughlin will test his speed in the 200 meters. Much of the Wolverines' long-sprints crew -- Desmond Melson, Vail Hartman and Josiah Carpenter -- will run alongside him at that distance, as well as short-sprinter Desmond Nicholas and hurdler Drake Johnson.
Johnson will also contest the 110-meter hurdles with teammate Roland Amarteifio, who himself is doubling up with the 400-meter hurdles.
In addition to the 200 meters, Nicholas will also compete in the long jump with horizontal jumps specialists Kevin Stephens Jr. and Daniel Butael.
Alex Schwedt will run his first race of 2018 in the Maize and Blue when he steps on the track for the 400 meters.
The Wolverines will also field a pair of 4x400 relays to conclude the afternoon, with Amarteifio, Melson, Hartman and McLaughlin comprising squad "A" and Schwedt, Carpenter, Nicholas and Khoury Crenshaw making up squad "B."
Saturday's action will be streamed online via ACC Network Extra, with live results available from Delta Timing. Fans can also follow along with the program's official social media channels for updates.
A closer approximation of the full team will be in action next weekend (March 23-24) as Michigan travels to Arizona State for the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge against the likes of Indiana, Nebraska, Penn State, Arizona State, California, Colorado and LSU.
