The University of Michigan rowing team will begin the spring season this Saturday and Sunday (March 17-18) on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, at Louisville's Cardinal Invitational. It marks the third year in a row that U-M has begun its season at this event, the same site of U-M's spring training trip earlier in March. The team began its transition from indoor training to outdoor rowing during that week, and returned to Ann Arbor last week with a renewed energy, ready to hit the water.
Michigan will send four crews to compete this weekend, including the first and second varsity eights, two varsity fours and one novice boat.
With temperatures fluctuating in the state of Michigan during early March, U-M has been getting in work on Belleville Lake and also indoors at the South Campus Performance Center. There, the team takes advantage of Michigan's first indoor tanks, and a newly outfitted erg room, where more than 80 athletes can work out simultaneously.
The team will be eager to race against quality competition like Tennessee, Notre Dame, Yale, Virginia and Big Ten opponents Minnesota, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
Races are set to begin at 9:14 a.m. on Saturday, with the last race of the day scheduled for 5:42 p.m. Action resumes at 9:14 a.m. on Sunday and ends after the final races at 11:38 a.m. Results will be posted on Row2K.com at the end of each day.

THINGS TO KNOW
• This year's roster features four captains leading the way for the Maize and Blue: seniors Kendall Brewer and Rae Oleshansky, junior Meghan Gutknecht and sophomore Tayla-May Bentley.Â
• Among the differences for the Wolverines this season will be a new home on campus: the South Campus Performance Complex is home to over two-thirds of Michigan student-athletes, including the rowing program, and contains space for nine teams overall in the 280,000-square-foot facility, which also holds Michigan's first indoor rowing tank.Â
• U-M will return 14 student-athletes from its 2017 NCAA Championships roster, including Pocock All-Americans Kendall Brewer (2016 second team; 2017 first team) and Kalia Krichko (2017 first team).
• The roster contains 16 true freshmen in total, with a large number of newcomers also represented in the varsity program. Look out for rookies Annika Hoffmann and Kate Burns, among others.
• After kicking the 2018 season off this weekend with a full travel party, U-M will split squads for its next competition. The varsity boats will head east to Princeton, New Jersey, to race against the Tigers, a perennial Ivy League contender, while the novice boats will road trip to Columbus, Ohio, to row against the Buckeyes.
